The Best Songs Inspired by Casino Games

A fair amount of our culture has been inspired by casinos and casino games. Hollywood has made many movies about casinos, about robbing casinos, about people trying to beat the house, or join the house; the list is in fact, endless. Even books have been written on the topic, if you think back to the original James Bonds books and Casino Royale. As a society we love a good casino game, and as with all other media, music has not escaped the passion. Below are three of the most famous songs about casino games ever written.

1.The Gambler by Kenny Rogers

No song is more iconic of the game of poker than The Gambler by Kenny Rogers. Even though the song was actually written by Don Schlitz in 1976, Kenny Rogers is the person most well known for singing it. The Gambler made it to number 1 on the country music charts when Rogers released it, and number 3 on the easy listening charts. It’s no surprise, and any avid poker player will tell you the lyrics are accurate. It’s obvious Don Schultz knew what he was talking about when he wrote, “you gotta know when to hold’em, know when to fold’em, know when to walk away, know when to run”.

2.Easy Money by Billy Joel

Just like any great country song, Easy Money by Billy Joel tells a story. The hero of the story is a man who loves to gamble, and he’s not too picky about where. Throughout the story, our hero comments on all the games he loves and includes slots, table games, dice and even the racetrack. Unlike a lot of songs about gamblers who love the games, this one isn’t a sad story, but rather a light-hearted tale about a man who knows his odds and is willing to take the chance for some easy money.

3.Luck be a Lady by Frank Sinatra

If anyone could make gambling sexy, Frank Sinatra could. Luck be a Lady was actually written and performed for the first time many years before it became Frank Sinatra’s signature tune, and was sung by cinema greats such as Barbara Streisand and Marlon Brando.  It tells the tale of a gambler who needs to win his bet and he sings about how luck would be on his side if she were a lady: “A lady doesn’t wander all over the room, and blow on some other guys dice.”!
