Slot Game Themes I Want To See In 2018
Although modern online slots games are certainly impressive in many ways, one way in which they are frankly lacking is the selection of really good themes. Now, I know what you’re thinking; slot games have such an amazing variety of themes, what could he possibly be complaining about?
But, stop and ask yourself this; just how interesting and varied are slots game themes really? How many slots games fall back on the same, tired old fruit symbol clichés? Hey, I love apples and melons as much as the next person, but at this point I’m at serious risk of suffering from a fruit overdose. Ancient Egypt, cute animals and jungle themes also seem to be a dime a dozen, so I had a good think about what I’d come up with if I worked for Microgaming, or any of the other leading online casino software developers, and this is what I came up with.
If I was the boss (humour me here) this is what we’ seen in slots in 2018:
More Real Video Game Slots
Now, Lara Croft and the popular Tomb Raider franchise have indeed been turned into a slot game theme. The Tomb Raider slots game, however, although nice for the most part, doesn’t take full advantage of the source material. Lara Croft is indeed present, but lets all just be honest and say that she is more of what could be called show-piece, as opposed to the tomb raiding, tiger shooting action hero she is supposed to be.
Tomb Raider is about climbing, exploring, dodging deadly traps, and escaping treacherous situations. The slots game version of Tomb Raider barely acknowledges this, and I think that’s a crying shame. As I said, the Tomb Raider slot game is a nice start, but I certainly think there is a great deal more that can be done with video game themed slot games.
Let me explain what I’m talking about.
Slot Theme: Doom
I’d like to see slots games that adopt video game themes, and make full use of the source material. Doom, for example, is a game I’ve always thought could be made into a fun and interesting slot game. What? There is already a Doom slot game? No, there isn’t. There is a slots game that has a few images from the Doom game, and little else.
I envision a slots game that delves deeply into the famous hell inspired artwork of Doom, drawing from the beautiful, yes horrifying imagery. Red skies, the endless dunes of Mars, and, of course, lots and lots of demons.
I’ve also often thought that slots game bonus mini-games have been sorely underutilised, and a Doom theme could certainly play into making a brilliant mini-game. How about blasting demons with a shotgun to reveal bonus prizes, complete with a ton of gore and plenty of blood? Sounds brilliant to me, and demon blasting is the best motivation I can think of to make a player want to hit the bonus rounds.
Doom also features some excellent music, and incredible sound design. Rip roaring and merciless metal music is the chorus of Doom, and that should certainly carry over into the slot game version. In fact, I imagine that as each slot game symbol slams into place, a shotgun should sound off, accompanied by the Doom metal that every fan knows and loves.
Slot Theme: The Joker
Now, hear me out on this one. I know that there are a number of Batman themed slots games, and some of them really are pretty good. But how about a slots game based entirely around the Joker? Most people are interested in Batman due to the Joker anyway, even though they probably aren’t aware of it. Without the Joker Batman is, let’s be honest, not the most interesting character.
I’m envisioning a Joker based slot game that has an enormous, Joker sized smile as the backdrop, and each symbol being just another crooked smile, different in only small ways. But, as the game progresses and the symbols start matching, the grinning teeth laugh, gnash manically, and the game rattles with shrieking laughter.
That sounds mad, and disturbing, I hear you saying? Well, yes, and that would be the point. I imagine a game that is famous for being strange, disturbing, and highly unusual. Obviously it would still be a slot game, but imagine how widely known it would become if the game seemed as if it was made by the Joker himself, as something that might appear in a Batman comic.
Interesting ideas? You damn straight they are. Grab your best artists, designers, and programmers, and get cracking, slot game companies. I’ll wait here until you’re done.
